During the 1979 Iran Hostage Crisis (in the movie), a few people died, particularly the American diplomats that were held hostages. The US embassy protected the Shah of Iran from the Iranians and as a result, the Iranians attacked the embassy and held many Americans hostage. Cinematography
In this scene, it showed the point of view of the diplomats while driving through the riot, in the bus. The camera is shaky letting the audience know that they’re nervous and afraid. The director did a good job in letting the audience know how the characters felt.
The airport scene shows the 6 diplomats with the CIA agent trying to flee Iran. This is a very intense scene especially when they are getting on the plane and Iranians figured out who they actually are. When they are running, camera shots are very sharp, and it intensifies the scene, thus, it puts viewer on the edge of their seat. The director is constantly switching scenes between the main characters and the Iranians, showing both frantic situations. In the scenes with the Iranians, the music was was fast paced, increasing the heart rate of the audience.
After the flight attendant announces that the flight is clear, all the escapees get up and hug. There is a huge sense of relief on the characters but also on the audience. The audience is on edge and yearning to know if they made it clear, and at that moment, all stress has vanished. Everyone is smiling, laughing, and hugging. The music is much more light-hearted and happy, now.
